We design 1bit/symbol/Hz parallel concatenatedrnturbo coded modulation (PCTCM) for the AWGNrnchannel with Tikhonov phase error. Constituent recursivernconvolutional codes are optimized so that thernturbo codes have both low error floor and good convergencernin the waterfall region. The pairwise errorrnprobability (PEP) based on the maximum likelihoodrn(ML) decoding metric is used to select codes with lowrnerror floor. We also present a Gaussian approximationrnmethod that accurately predicts convergence thresholdsrnfor PCTCM codes on the AWGN/Tikhonovrnchannel. Simulation results show that the selectedrncodes perform within 0.6dB of constellation constrainedrncapacity, and have no detectable error floorrndown to bit error rates of 10~(-6).
