PMDI Binder Developments for European Particleboard and MDF

Bayer introduced PMDI-based Desmodur~(~R) and Mondur~(~R) (polymeric methylene-diphenylene-diiso-cyanate) as a binder for the industrial production of particleboard for the construction and furniture industries in Germany in 1973. Since then, these binders have also found application in oriented strand-board, laminated strand lumber, medium density fiberboard (MDF), and moldings. This paper will present an update on a new PMDI binder development for European MDF, how it is made possible by PMDI, what properties it is able to achieve, which markets it opens up to MDF products, and what implications PMDI has for MDF processing.
