Utilization of Dynamic Simulation at Tembec Specialty Cellulose Mill

A high-fidelity dynamic simulator has been developed for Tembec Specialty Cellulose mill in Temiscaming in order to facilitate evaluation of mill upgrade alternatives. Areas of interest were primarily the screen room and the oxygen delignification stage, where it was desired to acquire an understanding of how the proposed upgrades were going to affect the overall process. Utilizing simulation early in the process design stage has delivered substantial benefits including tighter design and smoother startup while minimizing the design life cycle. Since the startup of the new mill the simulator has evolved into a full mill dynamic simulator, which has been interfaced to the mill data historian PI. This approach has made it possible to evaluate several different process and operational modifications based on real process conditions. The model has been utilized for several applications including the mill energy balance, effluent flows and mill water balance. Incorporating the grade specifications in the simulator has been instrumental in verifying the process dynamics during a grade transition. The existing control strategy along with the interlocks has also been implemented in order to facilitate study of control and operational strategies and to identify the process and equipment limitations.
