EXTENDING VECTOR QUANTIZATION TO CLASSES OF SOURCES

A method for extending vectorrnquantization to classes of parametric sources isrnpresented in this paper. The extension is accomplishedrnby modeling the problem as one to design a n-levelrnquantizer for a source with an unknown parameterrnwhich takes values in a continuous space, thus, findingrna minimax quantizer over the class of sources. Unlikernuniversal quantization methods, the approach achievesrnoptimal performance for a fixed dimension.
