This paper develops a systematic framework for designing optimal reaction solvents while simultaneously considering process constraints, environmental constraints, safety, and material compatibility issues. Solvent attributes for extractive fermentation processes (such as biocompatibility, inertness, and phase splitting) are investigated in this paper. The mathematical programming based solvent design framework is successfully solved for ethanol extractive fermentation using an Outer Approximation approach. For the case studies, the proposed design approach not only identifies a solvent for the new application but also finds a new candidate solvent for ethanol extractive fermentation.
