The first hexabenzyl-hexaaza-isowurtzitane containing azide groups has been prepared and fully characterized. A study of the influence of the azide group in either the 2- or 4-position of the benzene ring revealed an interesting difference regarding the formation of the isowurtzitane polycycle. Whereas in the case of the azide in the 4-position the corresponding hexabenzyl-hexaaza-isowurtzitane (X-ray) was formed, with azide in the 2-position a novel type of polycycle was obtained and isolated. The exact structure of this polycycle was elucidated by X-ray crystallography. Characterization was achieved among methods, such as vibrational and NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and elemental analysis, by the informative ~(15)N NMR spectra.
