A number of linear nitramines offer a wide range of theoretical impetus and flame temperature, ranging from 1016 Joules/g (at 2097°K) to 1761 Joules/g (at 4582°K). These have been known for several decades, nonetheless these compounds appear to be a neglected source of high energy where they offer the possibility of eutectics to reduce the solids loading in highly-filled systems. They also offer the possibility of being useful as energetic liquid propellants, or possibly as gelled propellants. Since linear nitramines have a wide range of burning rates, they should be considered as an attractive means of tailoring burning rates. It is also hoped that a review of these compounds will complement the search for energetic molecules possessing even better characteristics.
