A number of process hazards are associated with the collection and treatment of industrial wastewater. The most common process hazards are associated with the flammable atmospheres that cna result either from the methane or hydrogen sulfide gas produced by anaerobic bioconversion or from the vaporization of volatile orgnaic compounds (VOC's) that are initially dissolved or suspended in industrial wastewaters.Major accidents have resulted from ignifition of flammable gas mixtures above wastewater treatment systems.Other process hazards include toxic fume exposure, asphyxiation, runaway chemical reaction, drowning, and mechanical hazards from rotating equipment. This paper will presnet an overview of the process hazards of industrial wastewater collection and treatment systems,as well as means for their prevention, mitigation and control.
