National Recovery Systems, Inc. (NRS) began recycling steel mill waste oxides in the early 1970's. These early efforts provided a flux addition to the basic oxygen furnaces to replace fluorspar. Expansion into waste recycling inthe early 1990's was fueled by increased environmental sensitivity, coupled with escalating landfill costs. This paper describes the recycling of waste oxides in the steel industry by cold bonded roll briquetting. The importance of binder development, especially for producing a quality briquette for the blast furnace, is discussed. The company's recycling facilities and history are described. More than 1.1 million tons of agglomerates have been produced and used during the initial four years of on-site recycling.
