Wear behaviour of aluminium-based composites containing ceramic particles

Wear behaviour of AA6061 based aluminium matrix composites reinforced with ceramic particles of the type TiB_2, B_4C, Si_3N_4, Al_2O_3 y SiC has been analysed. Composites were fabricated by a combination of powder metallurgy processing and hot extrusion. Wear test were conducted on a pin-on-ring apparatus under dry sliding conditions (dry friction), measuring both friction coefficient and wear rate. Tribolayer formed was analysed by means of profilometre, knoop microhardness and optical and scanning electron microscopy. Wear behaviour was improved for composites in every case, being better as the size of reinforcement increased. Friction coefficient did not show a clear tendency with respect to type or size of reinforcement.
