There are two popularly accepted origins of Raman enhancement, that is, electromagnetic and chemical enhancement. The former comes from the local field enhancement caused by the roughed metal surface, and the latter is attributed to the charge transfer between the adsorbed molecules and metal substrates. What we want to know is the quantitative correlation between the Raman enhancement with the structural fcatures of the SERS-active systems, which is the frontier in the field of SERS.
