The bulk production of chopped carbon fibers from high QI pitches via centrifugal melt spinning (CMS) was investigated. CMS fiber mats were produced from coal tar pitch containing 24% QI. Considerable improvements have been made to the CMS feed and fiber collection systems. Tests have proved that the CMS is capable of operating as a true continuous fiber production process. This paper reports on the continued refinement of the CMS process as a viable and economic method for producing carbon fibers and activated carbon fibers from coal-derived feedstocks. Processing conditions and techniques for producing carbon fibers and activated carbon fibers are also presented.
