Historic Bridges of Pennsylvania: An Industrial Legacy in Transit

Pennsylvania is unsurpassed in the history of bridge building, boasting more bridge building firsts than any other state, and was, at one time, home to many of the most prolific and important bridge builders, bridge engineers, and bridge building firms in the nation. This paper briefly traces this history while highlighting examples where PennDOT has sought to preserve this history through rehabilitation or alternative uses.
