Highly porous, cellular SiC-ceramics with a unidirected pore structure were manufactured by infiltration of pyrolysed hardwood (Pine), softwood (Oak) and Rattan at 1600℃ in inert atmosphere with two different gaseous precursors: Si and SiO-vapors. Pyrolysis of the natural wood, infiltration and reaction into SiC was monitored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray analysis (XRD) and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA/DTA). Depending on the kind of wood as well as on the infiltration and reaction parameters, grain size and specific surface area can be tailored in a broad range. The compressive strength parallel and perpendicular to the cell elongated direction of the porous SiC-ceramics were characterized.
