Energy engineers and energy managers have in the last twenty years seen how performance contracting has become a viable method of implementing a wide range of energy, water and maintenance saving opportunities. Over this period, energy engineers have been key team members in developing and implementing performance contracts. By clearly defining their role and the services they offer, energy engineers can expand their service to include all phases of an energy services program. Is performance contracting an opportunity to create new business for energy engineering professionals? What set of services does the energy engineering professional provide? What are the deliverables required for engineering support of a performance contract? How do the requirements for engineering support of performance contracting projects vary from those required for projects implemented without performance contract? This paper responds to these questions and clarifies the role of the energy engineer participating in the performance contracting arena.
