Rehabilitation of the Haverhill-Bath Covered Bridge - Construction Phase

The Haverhill-Bath Covered Bridge, the second oldest remaining covered bridge in the United States, is undergoing a much needed rehabilitation that will preserve it for future generations. The bridge was completed in 1829 after two years of construction and utilizes 256 foot long, two span Town Lattice trusses with added nail laminated arches. The bridge underwent 170 years of continuous use until it was bypassed and closed to vehicular traffic in 1999. The bridge trusses, roof framing and floor beams are believed to be of original, 1829 construction, while the arches and sidewalk framing date to the early 1900's.rnThe rehabilitation of the bridge includes an innovative temporary shoring system utilizing high strength steel rods within the bridge that form a type of reverse suspension bridge to allow removal and replacement of bridge members. The rehabilitation also includes replacement of damaged members, realignment of the trusses and arches, new siding and decking and upgrades to the fire protection systems.
