We present our experience with a reconfigurable hardware-based cryptographic engine. We used Altera field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based development boards to reap the benefits of fast, hardware-based encryption without giving up the flexibility which is typically associated with software-based approaches. This is the first stage of this project, and we are using the FPGA-based project to encrypt the contents of a standard USB "flash drive". The encryption process requires no extra effort on the part of, and is in fact totally invisible to, the computer and end-user.
