Expiring fixed feed in tariffs, as well as historically low electricity prices on the power markets, lead torna demand for new operational models for biomass based power generation. The increase of solar and wind power hasrnled to an increasing demand for control reserve. A requirement for the participation in this market is the flexibility ofrnpower generation. For biomass based combined heat and power generation (CHP) it is therefore necessary, to installrnan appropriate thermal energy storage in order to decouple heat generation in the boiler and power generation in thernturbine. In the case study, the installation of a salt based high temperature thermal energy storage at a biomass CHPrnplant and the participation on the control reserve market were investigated. Results show that, under current marketrnconditions, an economically feasible operation is unlikely to be established. Especially the uncertainty of call-offrnorders and the high price for wood chips lead to a negative economic results. A possibility for improving the modelrncould be a combined participation on several electricity and power markets e.g. energy stock exchange, balancingrnenergy and control reserve.
