CAPE MAY COUNTY ENERGY RECOVERY PROJECT

The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (CMCMUA), Zahren Alternative Power Corporation (ZAPCO), and SCS Engineers, PC (SCS) collaborated on development of a landfill gas energy recovery project at the CMCMUA's Environmental Complex in Cape May County, New Jersey. The project was awarded the gold medal in the LFG utilization category of SWANA's 2000 Excellence in Solid Waste Management Awards program. CMCMUA contracted with ZAPCO for the engineering, construction, and operation of a state-of-the-art landfill gas collection facility, flare facility, and energy facility at its sanitary landfill in 1995. ZAPCO subsequently hired SCS to design the collection system, the flare facility, and the gas delivery pipeline, and to obtain the permits required from the various State agencies having jurisdiction over the project. This paper concerns the energy facility which includes the use of landfill gas at a local State facility, the Woodbine Developmental Center (WDC), located approximately 1.2 miles from the flare facility site. The WDC is a State facility managed and operated by the Department of Human Services, Division of Developmental Disabilities, which has three large oil-fired, water tube boilers that produce steam for heating and cooling of approximately 65 buildings.
