Demonstration Test of the Capstone Microturbine on Landfill Gas

Capstone Turbine Corporation manufactures a 30 kW microturbine that was initially offered for natural gas, propane, oil field waste gas and diesel. Based on the success of these units, Capstone approached the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County for the purpose of conducting a demonstration test on landfill gas. Beginning in early 2000 a demonstration test program was conducted covering 2,000 hours of operation on landfill gas at the Puente Hills Landfill. Testing on a similar microturbine was also conducted at a wastewater facility on digester gas. This paper will present performance and emissions data collected during the test program. A discussion of the recommended gas cleanup will be included as well as the short and long-term effects of burning landfill gas on system performance and maintenance.
