CAPTIVE CARRY TESTING AS A MEANS FOR RAPID EVALUATION OF UAV HANDLING QUALITIES

A preliminary evaluation has been made of a captiverncarry rig for testing handling qualities ofrnsmall UAVs. The method used was to attach thernvehicle such that it is free to rotate on a tripodrnabove a car. Results indicate that the method isrnvery suitable for evaluating aircraft trim and controlrnsurface effectiveness. The method is shownrnto provide repeatable, sufficiently accurate datarnto provide information regarding to aircraft stabilityrnand control at a preliminary design stagernand at low cost. Further work is required to ascertainrnthe ability to measure forces and momentsrnsuch that derivatives can be estimated.
