This paper presents a methodology to identify a suitable site for disposal of waste using remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS) techniques. For this, a step-wise site selection procedure has been evolved following the National and International standards, and guidelines given by government of India. Conventional and non-conventional data have been used for generation of various thematic maps like drainage, road network, land use / land cover, lineament, hydro-geomorphology etc. GIS is used to create buffer zones, and for union and integration of thematic maps to identify appropriate site. Proposed methodology successfully identifies the sites fulfilling all assigned criterion selected for waste disposal. Application of methodology is demonstrated for disposal of waste in the vicinity of heavily polluted industrialized area of Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, India.
