WWW. USING A GIS SYSTEM IN NA TURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT AND RECYCLING OF SOLID WASTE

This study is collaboration between the Lebanese American University (LAU), The Islamic Development Bank, and the Municipality of Marjeyoun regarding preparing a digitized map of the village with related features that helps protecting the environment. Tasks include: (ⅰ) prepare a GIS map of Marjeyoun that will serve as a zone management plan, (ⅱ) prepare in the municipality area an environmental assessment that will identify the cumulative pressures and impacts of some human activities on the village and the environment and propose plans to improve the situation, (ⅲ) initiate a recycling program in the municipality after performing the feasibility and necessary waste sampling, (ⅳ) evaluate the performance of the existing wastewater treatment plant and propose methods to improve the liquid waste disposal within the municipality, (ⅴ) initiate public awareness campaigns that will increase the involvement of the private sector in solving environmental problems in general and in solid waste management and recycling in specific. A brochure was prepared on the project, and a workshop was organized detailing the outcomes of the study through a public awareness campaign.
