A synthesis gas, which has high contents of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, is derived from biomass in the CHPrn(combined heat and power) plant Güssing. The synthesis gas is highly suitable for hydrogen production and synthesisrnapplications like Fischer Tropsch synthesis. High efficiencies of more than 60% can be reached by generatingrnhydrogen from biomass, and total efficiencies of up to 80% are possible by utilisation of waste heat [1]. The aim ofrnthe work was to develop industrial applications for the generation of hydrogen from biomass in order to provide it tornthe chemical industry and refineries. The process from biomass to hydrogen was designed and simulated in the scopernof this project. Based on experiences gathered in this project, the process steps were combined in a new way and arntest rig for experiments with real synthesis gas was erected. In this pilot plant, the innovative process configurationrnincluding new components was tested with a tar and sulphur-containing synthesis gas slip stream from the biomassrnCHP in Güssing.
