FEATURES AND USES OF A MULTILINGUAL FULL-TEXT ELECTRONIC THESES AND DISSERTATIONS (ETDS) SYSTEM

As part of ongoing international efforts to construct a networked digital library of theses and dissertations, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) (formally, the Korea Research and Development Center (KORDIC)), has been developing a digital library for Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) since 1998. The major goal of the project has been to construct a full-text database for Korean ETD files and to implement a large-scale full-text document retrieval system accessible on the Internet. The research reported in this paper serves as an initial effort to understand how this system has been used. This paper first describes the major features of the system. Then, based on data analysis from the system transaction logs from the system's inception in June 1999, to October 2000, this paper constructs a larger picture of how the KISTI ETD system has been used. Finally, this paper discusses the theoretical implications and practical applications of the findings.
