The competitive 21st century military businessrnenvironment operates within the confines ofrndecreased defense funding with increasedrncustomer expectations in reducing both therncycle times of product development and the totalrncost of ownership. Operating in these twornconfines will require a paradigm shift in therntraditional ways of doing business.rnRevolutionary changes in management andrnmilitary procurement will enable an effectivernintegration of advanced technologies, leanrnmanufacturing, acquisition reform, andrnmotivated workforce. Managing the futurernglobal enterprise includes not only the primerncontractor and the supply chain but also therninternational partners, teammates, alliances, therninternational and domestic customers, andrninnovative business arrangements.rnBefore a company can effectivelyrnimplement revolutionary changes, it must firstrnappreciate the ideas that worked in the past andrnwill continue working in the future. Therefore,rnenhancing competitiveness includes the abilityrnnot only to benefit from legacy successes butrnalso to implement continuous improvements.rnMuch of what is required for success in thernfuture is being implemented now at LockheedrnMartin Aeronautics Company to enhancernexisting F-16 and F-22 programs and to ensurernreadiness for future aircraft programs.rnThis paper will present unique challengesrnof doing business in the defense aerospacernindustry of the future and how Lockheed MartinrnAeronautics is poised to meet the country’srndefense needs within cost and schedulernrequirements.
