The development of a truly sustainable landfill is important for the safe and effective management and control of waste in the future. For this reason, semi-aerobic landfill approach is developed to understand different degradation processes. Three 10-liter plexiglas reactors were used to represent anoxic, anaerobic and aerobic zones in the experiments. Simulated landfill reactors were loaded with shredded and compacted solid waste mixture of 2 kg. The experimental effort was divided into two operational stages: seperate reactor operation, combined reactor operation with external leachate recycle. This paper presents the results of biogas generation and leachate quality obtained after 268 days of laboratory operations. The results of experiments indicated that aeration of waste mass produces a rapid oxidation of organics and nitrogen. Aerobic reactor had higher chemical oxygen demand (COD), phospohate and nitrogen removal efficiencies than the anaerobic one. Combination of anaerobic and aerobic processes with recirculation decrease stabilization time compared to anaerobic degradation.
