Population increase, economic progress, expansion in urban areas, rapid industrial development, and rising standards of living have contributed to a sharp rise in solid waste generation in Pune. It is estimated that municipal waste generation rate in Pune about 1000- 1200 MT per day in 2004 -05, having approximately equal dry waste and wet waste percentage. The Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) plan is that which makes full use of all available technologies. The development of ISWM systems necessitates the establishment of a hierarchy, based on a sound pyramid of prevention, rules & regulations, waste minimization, reuse & recycling, waste treatment, combustion, composting & landfilling practices. The paper presents and discusses the MSW in Pune, present situation of production, collection, recycling, and treatment. In this context analysis is applied to evaluate different forms and suggest an approach capable of assessing the whole strategy for waste management. The analysis is based on the sustainability & the efficiency of individual options, considering a system that might include landfills, incineration, composting, Bioreactor landfill etc.
