This paper sums up and concludes the studies carried out in cooperation between Giat Industries, ONERA and DGA/ETBS, the first results of which were presented during the 20th International Symposium on Ballistics. The objectives of these studies -to understand the mechanisms governing the aeroballistics of yawing and spinning projectiles and also to improve the Navier- Stokes prediction- have been attained. A judicious combination of free flight tests, using 155 mm projectiles instrumented with yaw probes, static and dynamic wind tunnel tests and Navier- Stokes computations was used for validation purposes. A wide range of angles of attack, spin rates and Mach numbers (subsonic, transonic and supersonic) were investigated. The analysis of Magnus flow physics and the effect of the boattail angle on the static and dynamic projectile aerodynamics are presented.
