摘要

This paper presents and discusses results of a new and innovative approach to quantitative ballistic damage evaluation using x-ray computed tomography (XCT). XCT scans were performed on two impacted titanium diboride (TiB_2) disk samples. One disk was pre-stressed with a steel constraining ring while the other was only confined. The amount of physical meso-damage ( >250 μm)was calculated for each scan (slice) at increasing radius from the center of impact, resulting in a set of axisymmetric damage fraction plots for each disk. Three-dimensional plots of damage fraction as a function of radius and depth (i.e., distance from impact face) were created to graphically visualize the volumetric distribution of damaged and residual penetrator material.
