Areas of abandoned coalgasification-, cokeovenplants and towngasworks normally contain hazardousrncontaminants as there are among others PAHs, cyanides, monoaromatic compounds and phenols. Thereforerna strong impact on the groundwater can be expected. In the thousands of sites existing in Germany arncomplete remediation is almost impossible. Combustion is the only safe way to eliminate the contaminantsrnby mineralization; but is to expensive and not applicable for the large amount of soil to be treated. Soilrnwashing and bioremediation is limited by the composition of the contaminants on the one side and by thernsoil structure on the other. Therefore the success of the mentioned remediation techniques is normally weakrnand only in some selected cases efficient enough. A combination of different methods according the siterncharacteristics might help to increase the efficiency.rnOn the other hand it is obvious, that there are natural barriers integrated between the contaminants and therngroundwater as there are e.g. solubility adsorbability and biodegradability of the hazardous compounds andrnthe distance to the groundwater. Recently developped methods for downstream groundwater remediation arernpresented and discussed for the application in gaswork contaminations. Those so called 刾assive systems?rnare said to be very economic and might help to prevent further distribution of the contaminants into thernenvironment.
