FO-02: FROM GAS-FIRED COOLING TO GAS-FIRED REFRIGERATION DEVELOPMENTS AND OPPORTUNITIES IN THE U.K. AND SPAIN

Gas-fired cooling for air conditioning is now well established around the world and offers significantrnadvantages both environmentally, and for the user. This paper presents an overview of the status of currentrntechnologies for gas-fired cooling in Spain and the UK. Both countries are seeing similar growth in their airrnconditioning sales and are beginning to achieve successful penetration of gas into this market.rnIn contrast, gas technology for the smaller refrigeration market is much less developed. Refrigeration coversrnmany applications and a much wider range of operating conditions, particularly of duty temperature, whichrntypically varies from -40 to +15 ~oC. Successful demonstration of some gas-fired technology in both Spainrnand the UK has, however, been carried out. Several commercial and technical issues relevant to therndevelopment of gas-fired refrigeration in Europe are presented, addressing in particular how the progressrnmade in gas-fired air conditioning might be replicated in the refrigeration market.
