The "Unique Signal" methodology is one of the key constituents used in modern nuclear detonation safety. This paper provides a mathematical approach that helps in understanding why the unique signal is effective in resisting normal and abnormal environments that might otherwise compromise system safety. Some of the mathematics-based results shown are: the reasons that the unique signal methodology can provide greater protection against accident environments than could combinational techniques, the reason that the probability of inadvertently duplicating a unique signal comprising r bi-valued events cannot be measured as (1/2)~r, and the value of independent sequential communication of unique signal events.
