The views expressed in this paper are the views of the authors and not necessarily those of the MOD. Amongst the conclusions following the publication of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) SOUP (Software of Unknown Pedigree) in 2001 was that pure black box SOUP should not be tolerated in safety-critical applications on the grounds that insufficient safety evidence could not be made available to make valued judgements. Since then, work has been carried out by the MOD to provide SOUP Guidance and the validation of a costing model for SOUP Certification that is to be provided to Integrated Project Teams (IPT's) and any other interested parties on how to deal with SOUP in military systems. This paper is intended to outline the strategy guidelines to be adopted in the acquisition of equipment for the UK Defence systems containing SOUP.
