The paper describes the results of experiments and the modelling of heterogeneous detonating mixtures of steel particles with condensed high explosives (HE). A theoretical two-phase model deals with a consideration of the HE and particle phases complemented by simple kinetics of the explosive-products transformation. Various cases of particle distribution around the charge are considered and the influence of the distribution on the particle acceleration is studied theoretically and experimentally. These experiments consider effects of the distribution and symmetry of the initiation on the target. It is shown that selection of the geometry of a charge set-up, where the layer of embedded particles is aligned with the boundary of the charge, is beneficial to the particle acceleration. A criterion of the penetration performance is proposed on the basis of an after-impact analysis of targets.
