The nitramine composite propellant, containing cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX), has received significant attention to meet the characteristics of the low vulnerability and high performance in future advanced weapon systems. The nitramine composite propellant usually consists of nitramine particles, polymeric binders, and other ingredients, and their physical structure is therefore heterogeneous. The flame and combustion wave structure of nitramine composite propellant, however, are mostly homogeneous and similar to those of double base propellant due to the presence of a homogeneous molten layer of melted nitramine and other ingredients on the burning surface. The burning rate exponents and coefficients were deduced from burning data. The burning rates in nitramine composite propellant have the different burning rate exponents and coefficients according to the pressure range. The burning rate of LOVA propellant with energetic plasticizer is found to be higher than that of propellant with inert plasticizer. In firing tests of 105 mm tank gun, ignition delay problems didn't take place in case of using benite strand in primer in spite of low vulnerability when compared with conventional propellants. The maximum pressure of LOVA propellant was 5000 ~ 6000 psia less than that of conventional propellant at the same muzzle velocity.
