Modern technologies are best implemented first in small vehicles rather than in automobiles becausernthe risk is much smaller due to the smaller project size and the higher price of those small vehicles perrnunit weight than automobiles.rnThis paper presents a modular system for the propulsion of small vehicles that uses the PowerNetrn42V standard for its main DC net and a CAN-bus for the information distribution to the modularrncomponents of the drive system. The system was developed at the University of Applied Sciences inrnBerne for autork ltd., a start-up company.rnDevelopment-goals were: good performance-to-price-ratio, safety, modularity, scalability. Thernsystem is ready to be applied to customer applications like (bi)cycles, mopeds, scooters, fork lifts,rngolf carts, wheelchairs, etc.rnA prominent application of this system is the chainless series hybrid electronic cycle. For thernelimination of the traditional chain on e-cycles autork won the Wall Street Journal Europe InnovationrnAward 2001 in the category Business/Transportation.
