“Out of sight – out of mind.” Does this statement apply for water networks? Yes, for too many, but definitely notrnfor those present at NoDig 2002 – they are constantly on our mind. But do we address the problem in an optimalrnway? How do we get exact and reliable information about the networks? The answer so far is – we do not. Anrnimportant step towards optimizing rehabilitation of water networks is the development of a reliable tool for exactrnmeasurement. A tool that measures remaining wall thickness, tells whether reduction is from the inside or thernoutside and gives you this for each individual pipe while the pipe is still in the ground. This paper describes suchrna technology implemented in the BIT-RTM Pipescanner, and shows what it can do. Together with otherrntechnologies and models a decision support system (DSS) is being developed within the frame of an ongoingrnR&D project with international participation. It will enable water network managers to be more proactive andrnmeet the decay, coordinate with other measures and rehabilitate the right pipe, the right way and at the rightrntime. It is evident that there will be a positive cost benefit effect of exact knowledge in combination with existingrndata, experience and alternative rehabilitation measures.
