AN ANALYSIS OF THE INTEGRATED LOGISTICAS SUPPORT CONCEPT EMPLOYED BY THE SA AIR FORCE ON NEW AIRCRAFT ACQUISITIONS

The South African Air Force (SAAF) recently acquired new aircraft, e.g. Gripen fighters, Hawk fighter trainers and A109 and Lynx helicopters. As part of the complex acquisition process, project teams consisting of personnel from the South African Armaments Corporation (ARMSCOR) and SAAF designed the Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) system, which would be used to support the aircraft system during operation.rnThe objective of this study was to investigate the current status of ILS management within the SAAF. This was done by comparing the designed ILS system against the theory contained in relevant literature, which resulted in the development of a new ILS model. The ILS system utilised by the SAAF was then evaluated against the ILS model, where the new aircraft acquisitions were investigated using the case study approach.rnNotwithstanding the fact mat the Logistics Support Plans delivered to the SAAF can be considered adequate, a number of shortcomings were noted with regard to the manner in which the SAAF utilises the ILS system, resulting in recommendations for improving the ILS model, such as the addition of Logistics Operational Testing and Evaluation.
