Implementation of Vital-Radio System Using NI Transceivers

In this paper, we introduce a low-cost Vital-Radio wireless device that can be deployed in smart homes to monitor the vital signals (heart and breath rate) of all users within its detectable range remotely without interfering with the users' experience and activities, contributing positively in its users' well being. The System works by transmitting wireless signals to monitor the minute movements due to inhaling, exhaling and heartbeats using NI transceivers. Vital Radio aims to make use of a state-of the art localization technique called FMCW to separate the reflected signal off multiple bodies and body parts into different buckets. It then analyzes the signals independently to accurately track the vital signs of multiple individuals simultaneously within its range. We describe a system model of an FMCW-based prototype implemented on LabVIEW with and without using the Frequency Hopping Technique to test the device's functionality.
