A method to detect and identify line outages in a power system is proposed. The statistics characterizing electricity demand are assumed to be known and propagated through a linearization of the power flow equations. The voltage phase angle measurements are collected using phasor measurement units (PMUs). Then, a quickest change detection (QCD) algorithm is applied to the voltage phase angles in order to detect and identify the line outage. It is shown that the proposed algorithm is applicable even when the transient dynamics of the power system following a line outage are considered. Case studies demonstrating the performance of the QCD algorithm on faults leading to transient dynamics are illustrated through the IEEE 14-bus test system.
