Economic viability of in-house DC system in Pakistan

Pakistan faces energy crisis in the form of electricity load shedding due to escalating demand as a result of population growth particularly during summer season. One of the basic reasons of declining Pakistan's economy is energy crisis. It is the duty of the government as well as citizens to play vital role in order to dig the country out of this issue completely. Darker scenario occurs when people find a solution to load shedding that has even more adverse effects to the power system and economy. One of those is the use of Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) that affects the power system and economy in many aspects. This paper focuses the negative effects of UPS on power system as well as the economy and proposes a solution in the form of in-house DC system. The reason of employing DC within a residence is due to the fact that several appliances that used to be AC operated are now DC operated and easily available in Pakistani markets. So why not to make use of this shift? The paper presents economic comparison of three topologies of in-house electrical network. First is the conventional AC system, second with DC source and AC loads and the third with DC source and DC loads. The results clearly show that a complete in-house DC system is far economical than the other two topologies.
