UPDATE ON THE KEMPER COUNTY IGCC PROJECT

Mississippi Power Company has constructed a 2 x 1 Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) facility in Kemper County,rnMississippi. The plant—based on the Transport Integrated Gasification (TRIG™) technology developed by Southern Company, KBR,rnand the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE)—can generate up to 582 MW of electricity at peak power production, with 524 MW fromrnsyngas produced from locally mined Mississippi lignite. The acid gas removal system at the plant captures carbon dioxide from thernsyngas and diverts it for use in enhanced oil recovery (EOR), making the Kemper facility’s carbon emissions comparable to those of arnsimilarly sized natural gas-fired combined cycle power plant. In addition to producing carbon dioxide, the plant also generatesrnammonia and sulfuric acid byproducts. The Kemper facility has achieved the integrated operation of both gasifiers, including thernproduction of electricity from syngas by both combustion turbines. The project has also captured carbon dioxide and placed it in thernpipeline for use in enhanced oil recovery. This paper describes the Kemper Plant design, reviews the project timeline, discusses thernplant operational performance, reviews project highlights, and provides an update on the status of the project.
