In this paper, a new congestion control algorithm has been proposed using the notion of fairness rate control and traffic class priority. In the proposed Priority based Fairness Rate Control (PFRC) scheme, the fair distribution of the bandwidth is governed by the traffic class priority, queue size and the connected load to a sensor node. We have considered tree topology of the network and both Real Time (RT) and Non-Real Time (NRT) traffic classes have been considered. These traffic classes have been assigned different priorities. The proposed algorithm has been implemented in NS-2 platform with IEEE 802.11 standard and the performance of the algorithm in terms of throughput, loss and delay parameter has been found to be superior to that of Yaghmaee et al., Difference of Differentials Rate Control (DDRC) and Fairness Rate Control (FRC) algorithms respectively.
