In the field of medical information systems medical images are transmitted through communication channels which are treated as more sensitive data and it is necessary to develop encryption algorithms, to protect them from insecure networks. The three main security services are confidentiality, integrity, and availability, and among these, confidentiality is required for exchanging medical images among physicians. Conventional algorithms like DES and AES are not commonly used due to the high redundancy of data. In this paper we presented a new medical image encryption technique using stream cipher algorithm which is one of the symmetric algorithm in cryptography. We have performed statistical tests on key stream generated for stream cipher. Several statistical tests on sample medical images are also performed and the results have been shown that our proposed encryption scheme is applicable for real time applications.
