摘要

The paper deals with the design of an electric locomotive drive system used in electric railway transportation. The drive system consists of an induction motor and a voltage source inverter. A dedicated induction motor design algorithm is developed, in order to improve the motor efficiency. The design of the induction motor was realized with MathCAD and validated with Matlab Simulink. In the second part of the paper, some aspects concerning the voltage source inverter design are presented. The power semiconductor devices were chosen from the datasheet of an electronic components manufacturer. The results obtained with a classical motor were in good agreement with the datasheet. Simulations developed with the newly designed motor were made in order to prove that the motor can provide better performances, specifically a higher energy efficiency.
