Modeling and simulation of phase-locked loops (PLL) microwave generators using Matlab/Simulink® basic blocks

Phase Locked Loops (PLL) signal generators are low-cost and high performant circuits for delivering RF and microwave carriers in wireless terrestrial and space telecommunications. In this paper, a Matlab/Simulink®-based simulator for designing PLL-microwave signal generators is presented. The developed software, includes the configuration of a PLL architecture using functional blocks to implement three-state phase/frequency detectors (PFD), passive and active loop filters, flip-flop-based frequency dividers and voltage controlled oscillators (VCO). The aim of this work is to develop an academic and didactic tool for a basic training on the design of PLL-based microwave generators. To illustrate the use of the developed software, the simulator results are used for the experimental realization of an X-band oscillator at 7.2 GHz as a signal carrier for potential terrestrial and space wireless communications.
