Two distinct methods we developed recently are used to describe the stationary non-linear solutions of plasmonic slot waveguides with an anisotropic metamaterial core, exhibiting a positive Kerr-type nonlinearity, surrounded by two semi-infinite metal regions. We demonstrate that for a highly anisotropic diagonal elliptical core, the bifurcation threshold of the asymmetric mode in symmetric structures is reduced from the GW/m level obtained for the isotropic case to 50 MW/m level. This property indicates a strong enhancement of the spatial nonlinear effects induced by the anisotropic metamaterial used for the core even at lower powers. Results obtained in the temporal domain using the nonlinear anisotropic FDTD are also provided.
