Advances in subtractive machining technology such as in turning and milling now allow for complex surface geometries to be fabricated quickly and precisely. Although many of these processes greatly reduce production time through greater material removal rates, they often have one major drawback: they leave unwanted cutting marks on the workpiece surface. Removal of these marks without altering workpiece form is critical in many precision engineering applications. This study demonstrates that magnetic abrasive finishing (MAF) can be used to remove unwanted turning feed marks from rough cutting on non-axisymmetric curved surfaces using a rotating magnetic tool.
