This paper presents the method of design of a nonlinear deadbeat control in order to improve the transient stability of a Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) power system in addition with STATCOM controller. The non-linear model of an SMIB system has been linearized using Feedback linearization technique. A novel approach of design of deadbeat control, known as Signal Correction Technique (SCT) is employed to generate an additional control signal from the dynamics of the system which is incorporated to the original non-linear system through an additional feedback loop. The additional corrected signal modifies the transient oscillations of the output of the test system to a deadbeat output. The performance of the test system with SCT based deadbeat control has been compared with the performance with nonlinear STATCOM controller. It has been observed that the proposed test system with SCT based deadbeat controller produces deadbeat response and improves transient stability significantly than the nonlinear STATCOM controller.
